hog heaven wreck/ wreck scuba diving question?!?!? diving south florida?

hi, im a beginner in scuba diving. i got my cert. last month and so far been on 6 dives. im looking into diving the hogs heaven wreck but three different sites told me three different depths. one said 80 ft one said 70 one said 65 as max depths. which 1 is it? and also is that an appropriate dive for beginners even if were not going to go inside of the wreck just swim along the outside. thanks

For recently certified divers, 65 or 70 feet is pushing the limits. You might be fine, but that’s no way to plan a dive. What if the surface has heavy swells? What if you get seasick? What if the wind is strong? How will you react to an unguided descent into the depths? These are all complications that add to the danger of a dive already at safe limits for your experience.

If you dive every day (at no more than 50 or 60 feet) for three or more days immediately before, it might be reasonable to descend briefly to 75 or 80 feet, but spend the majority of your dive at 50 or less—if conditions are reasonable: good light, good visibility, low current, calm water, not many divers in the water, etc.

A close read of the first source (below) indicates that the wreck is in 64 feet of water, so most of the wreck is above that, maybe upward to 35 or 45 feet depth. In that case, there is plenty of wreck to explore, just be sure not to get entangled, cut, lanced, or trapped. Don’t stick your head through any opening—pretend there is glass across them and you’ll be fine.

Even if a wreck came up to only 60 feet and visibility is good, you’ll be able to dive to 60 feet and be above the wreck and see it just fine. It’s safer above it than beside it. The downside of such a site is that there isn’t a nearby good place (like a sloping shore bottom) to hang out at 30 feet. If the dive operation provides an anchor or descent line, it’s easier to stay orientated, but not very interesting.
