keep the hodads outta the water?

I hear all these peole saying “no! dont start surfing we gotta do our best to keep all the kooks outta the water!”
but i keep thinking,
well then wheres the next gereration or surfers? i mean, we all started somewhere right?
and if you love the sport so much, why can’t we spread the good news and just have fun?
let me know what your point of view on this is…

Skylar,

That’s a very good question. Lots of us love surfing, and we are glad when people want to learn to surf, and join us in the water. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who have no respect for the ocean or other surfers, who ruin our good times. As much as we want to welcome newcomers, we want to welcome people who will understand surfing, and surfing etiquette and appreciate the sea. We don’t want ignorant “kooks” or “hodads” (wow, I haven’t hear anybody use that term since the 60s).

You offered a perfect example of what we are talking about when you picked that young fellow’s answer as “Best Answer” to your last surfing question. The VERY LAST THING we want is people to take silly on-line advice, and go down to the beach, grab a surfboard, and go out and get in our way. You need to learn what you are doing first, and understand the ocean, first. While professional lessons are probably best, your surfing friends, or surfing family members ( Mom, Dad, siblings) can teach you well also.

Back when I started in 1966, there was no such thing as lessons, but some older guys would help us out (sometimes). But, there were no where near as many people in the water surfing (or trying to surf) back then. It’s much different, and far more crowded, today. And most of us were ‘watermen’ to begin, having played in the ocean since we were able to toddle in.

I taught my son, and some neices, and I’m helping teach my grandkids. I welcome everybody to surf, who takes the time to learn the right way. Respect the ocean, respect other surfers and have fun.
Good luck!
