do plastic jugs/containers contain harmful chemicals just like what they say in plastic water bottles?

we reuse water bottles to store water in our fridge. But I heard that reusing and storing water in plastic water bottles (like the bottle of purified water) for a period of time can cause cancerous chemicals to leak in the water that we drink. But is it the same when you store water in plastic jugs (like the sports jugs (http://www.promotionalproducts.net/Graphics/sports_bottle_64oz.jpg) or jugs that children bring to school) for a long period of time? And therefore is it preferably safer than storing water in purified water bottles? And is there any truth to this?

There are different kind of plastics. Polypropylene(PP) and Polyethylene(PE) or PET. To differentiate these, look under the bottles in bottom it should show the recycle logo with a number 5 for PP or 1 for PET. PP is meant to be reused and it has the characteristic of withstanding heat up to microwave level, we can see the application in clingwrap as well.
PET or PE on the other hand is never meant to be reused and it is not heat/microwave resistant and it contains hazardous chemicals assuming it is able to be broken down; however, so far a lot of chemist still questions this.
