What age do dogs start swimming?

I have a lab, natural born water dog as are many retrievers and sporting dogs. I was curious if anyone knew the normal age a puppy starts swimming or rather enjoy swimming and being in water. Not thrown in and forced to swim like some people try (usually end up making the dogs terrified of water). The reason I ask is because my Vet told me that her golden retrievers don’t even get introduced to water until they are 4 months and even then its sort of the baby hold in the water type thing. Whereas my lab is now 4 mo old and is swimming out deep for sticks and running up and down shallow waters after frogs and small snakes. I mean this pup is like a swimming machine. So my question, likely to other water dog owners. What is the norm? Is my dog oddly advanced or is my vet just overly cautious?

I introduce my pups to water at 5 weeks of age, long before they ever leave here for their new homes.
If the introductions are done before fear memory develops (11 weeks of age), they only remember the fun. If you wait until after 11 weeks of age to do introductions, you are better off to wait until after they can properly process their fears.
