scuba diving, open water dives?

i wanting to get in to this sport. i am planing on taking open waters dive classes for now, well start in a few months…what all do i need for an open water(100ftplus) dive. please list all tools/ things i need and also what is gonna make my dive easier and safer. money is not a issue for me and dont mind paying for safety. and what brands r best to stick w/?

Step #1: Get your open water certification. This involves classroom, pool work, and certification dives. This will cost between $400 (group class, group dives) to $1,000 (private class, private dives, boat fees). For the open water class you will have to get mask, fins, booties, and snorkle. This can range from $300 to $1,000 depending on the quality of gear that you are getting.

Step #2: Time to buy other gear. You have the mask, fins, snorkle, and boots from Step #1. I would get through the open water class and then buy your gear.

Regulator Assembly (first stage, primary second stage, alternate second stage, pressure gauge). I would try to get one that is designed for cold water diving. A cold water regulator will work in warm water, but a warm water regulator may freeze up in cold water. The shop will toss around stuff like environmentally sealed and oil filled. Ask the simple question if you can dive in 40 F water with the regulator.

BCD (bouyancy compensator device). There are three types: jacket, back inflate, and backplate plus wing. Ask about all of them, and see if they have any that you can try out in the pool. Comfort is the main key for a BCD as they will all complete the same task underwater. I own all three, and depending on the dive (teaching, vacation, drysuit, wreck, ice or cave) will decide which one I wear.

Exposure Suit. Buy the exposure suit for the most type of diving that you will do. You have wetsuits and drysuits. Wetsuits come in various thicknesses depending on how cold/warm the water will be. I have used my drysuit from 34F water to 84F water, but they are expensive and required maintenace. You may need hood and gloves depending on the temperature of the water.

Dive Computer and Dive Watch: In class, you’ll learn how to manually plan your dives. You’ll need a watch that can be taken to depth. I use my watch and manual plans as my back-up system. I dive using my computer as the primary planning and tracking tool. I do not recommend a wireless pressure gauge as I have never had good experiences with them, but your mileage may vary.

Tank: If you plan to dive locally, you may want to buy a tank or two. If a majority of your diving will be done on vacations, you’ll probably just want to rent tanks for your local diving. For tank size, it will mainly depend on how much air you need and consume. My wife breathes haf the amount of air that I do. For local diving, I bought tanks twice the size as hers.

Accessories:

Cutting device: Forget about the large knife. Get EMT shears (they can cut a penny) and a small knife.

Surface signalling device: Ask about a “safety sausage”. These are dayglor orange/yellow that are about 6 feet long. Imagine surfacing 200 feet from the boat. Just waving your arms may not be enough. Add in the 6 foot long dayglow orange tube and you’ll be seen. Add a whistle or an air powered signaller (won’t work if you are out of air though).

Pony Bottle: This is a smaller tank that carries some emergency/back-up air. This will depend on each diver and the conditions. 100 feet down in the Caribbean versus 100 feet down in Lake Michigan are two different animals.

Step #3: Dive more. Get some dives under your belt. Stay under 60 feet. Simply stated, do these to get comfortable and familiar with your gear. It is easier to solve issues at 60 feet than it is at 100 feet for a couple of reasons. New divers have to look for items on their gear. Experienced divers know where they are and can just reach for them. That means a lot in an emergency.

Step #4: Take the Advanced Open Water class. Sure you could build your way up to 100 feet and dive safely, but why re-invent the wheel. Plus, you’ll have an instructor that you can bounce questions off of.

Brands: At this point of the game, I don’t think there are any bad brands for the major items. I would go to the dive shop and start talking to them about the type of diving you plan to do and what brands they would recommend. Go to more than one dive shop. It is tough to get this conversation from an online site.
