Out of all the famous ship wrecks that have happened why do people still get so amped up over the Titanic?

It’s been almost 100 years and yet there still talking about it. Visiting the site. Exhibiting artifacts around the country (which I went to see) Her sister ship Olympic was practically a copy of it and it was sold for scrap in the 30′s. Not much caring happening there huh? The other triplet Gigantic…errrrr Britannic sank too but is easier to get to and I think is largely intact. Yet not much caring there. Ships built today would make it look one of the life rafts it should have had. So what’s the deal here?
There’s one little thing everyone seems to be missing. There were two ships just like it! One came BEFORE it and the other AFTER and it sank too! Yet nobody talks about them in the same way or should I say they hardly talk about them at all.

Apart from Doña Paz, Le Joola and Sultana the Titanic is one of the greatest peacetime maritime disasters (in terms of loss of life) and led to changes in maritime law. Other heavier casualties are recorded in wartime. It is not the ship so much, apart from the fact she was on her maiden voyage, she was not technologically advanced (compared to contemporary Cunard liners) nor were her sister ships – although they were big – the only casualties on the Britannic were 30 whose lifeboats had been lowered too soon and were pulled into the screw – the co-developer of the aqualung, Jacques Cousteau discovered her. While afloat there is a certain romance for ships but after their useful life, apart from a certain archaeological interest (and some treasure-seekers and those with morbid curiosity) there is little attachment to them beyond being the sites of so many deaths.

One more thing, Titanic and her sister ships were not unsinkable, nor were they claimed to be. It is a case of an oft-repeated claim becoming fact and is a myth. Mauretania (a Cunard liner) did have that claim made of her – on only one piece of literature Titanic was claimed to be “practically unsinkable” a fine distinction, I know – she was designed to stay afloat after 4 of her 16 compartments had flooded, unfortunately 6 of the compartments flooded and as Archimedes will explain that was too much.

Titanic: Touchstones of a Tragedy: The Timeless Human Drama Revisited through Period Artifacts and Memorabilia

Titanic: Touchstones of a Tragedy stands alone in the genre of books on the legendary ship thanks to its abundant use of artifacts and memorabilia not previously seen by those beguiled by the doomed White Star Liner. With his use of these striking images and a wealth of facts to tell the Titanic’s near mythic tale in a novel way, author Santini presents readers with a museum’s worth of…
