Cowes, Phillip Island has something for everyone from little Penguins to high speed racing
Cowes is the main town on beautiful Phillip’s Island, and is the central place to enjoy the great fishing, sports, and wildlife that this idyllic tourist hotspot is known for.
There’s no end to activities here. Cowes beach offers swimming during the day, while the esplanade showcases a number of great restaurants that serve as the starting point for the evening’s activities. If you’re into wildlife, jump on a boat and check out the seals lounging on the Seal Rocks, or visit the Little Penguins that hop ashore each day at sunset at Summerland Beach.
Originally called Mussel Rocks, Cowes was the main terminal for the ferry from the mainland. Of course, that was before the bridge between St. Phillips Island and the Mainland opened up. The Cowes of yesteryear was just as quaint as the Cowes of today, with visitors enjoying the island’s sights on horseback, and sleeping in guesthouses lining the seafront.
Today, there are some more modern accommodations, restaurants and shops for tourists to enjoy. For example, the town now boasts boat-launching facilities, cruise vessels, and boats available for hire. Oh, and the beaches are still there: fine sand stretches with views of the islands off the coast.
In April each year, the island starts to rev up as the World Superbike Championships come to town. Likewise, October is well known for the Australian Motor Cycle Grand Prix, an always-exciting test of speed and endurance.
Only 140 KMs from Melbourne, Cowes is easily accessible via the South Gippsland Highway. You can also reach the town by taking the passenger ferry from Mornington Peninsula. If you choose this route, simply catch the boat at Stony Point.
