Scylla was a six-headed, man-eating monster on one side of the Strait of Messina (between Sicily and the toe of Italy), and Charybdis was a whirlpool on the other side. It was impossible to pass between them without falling victim to one or the other. Having to take his ship that way, Odysseus chooses to steer toward Scylla’s side, so that he will lose only six of his men rather than the whole ship and everyone on it. (Vergil, writing 700+ years later, showed Aeneas’s moral superiority by having him go the long way around Sicily rather than have to make such a choice, but Homer evidently didn’t know the geography of the Mediterranean so well as Vergil did.)
The phrase “Scylla and Charybdis” has come to mean “the devil and the deep blue sea” or “a rock and a hard place.” To be caught between any of these is to be faced with a decision between equally undesirable alternatives–or nearly equal. Odysseus choose the lesser of two evils. .
