I am at a very high risk for hypothermia. Am I at an even high risk if I scuba dive in a wesuit?
I am going scuba dive on catalina next month. I spoke with my doctor and we reviewed my medical history and realized I am at a high risk for hypothermia and recommended I dive in a dry suit. The dive shop does not rent dry suits. Will a wet suit be sufficient enough to prevent hypothermia? Should I try to find a dry suit somewhere or wait for warmer weather?
Dry suits are not something you can just put on and use without some training. Since your previous questions indicate that you are not already a certified diver my opinion is that a dry suit would be too much for you to manage on your first diving experience.
I recommend that you use a two-piece wetsuit (consisting of a step-in jacket top and a “farmer john” bib-overall-like bottom) that is 6.5mm thick. This doubles the thickness over your torso to 13mm, which is where a lot of heat loss occurs. You will also want a 6.5mm hood, gloves, and boots. Wetsuit fit is extremely important – it needs to be snug enough to limit the flow of water through the suit without being so tight that it interferes with your breathing or cuts off circulation. The better the suit fits, the warmer you will be and the more enjoyable your dive will be.
58 degree water is cold, but when it comes to scuba it isn’t THAT cold. True cold water diving is in the upper 30s to low 40s, and there are still those who dive those temperatures in wetsuits (I did for several years until I finally went dry). It comes down to individual cold tolerance (which you can’t control), wearing the right exposure protection, and limiting the time that you spend in the water (which you can control). Let the instructor who is taking you diving know that your cold tolerance is not very high before your dive and then let him/her know when you start getting chilled during the dive so you can get out before you get hypothermic.
I can tell you are excited about the opportunity to scuba dive, so I say go ahead and give it a try next month. If you get really cold and don’t enjoy it as much as you hoped, remember that you can always try it again in the future in more favorable conditions.
I hope you have a fun time!
