What size and type of powerboat would I need?

I know I will have to take courses, etc. and am prepared to do so. I am entirely new to this and am thinking of retiring in Florida and getting a boat that my wife and I would be able to sleep on, and would be oceanworthy enough to go to the various caribbean islands. I am not a fisherman, so don’t want a fishing boat. Can someone get me started on the right path?

The Power Squadron or USCG Auxillary teach safe boating courses but they do not go out on a boat to teach, its all classroom. You may want to consider renting a boat or chartering one first to see how you like it. Or purchase one that is not too large at first, something that you feel comfortable handling. If you do buy one make sure the dealer gives you lessons with a captain (10 hrs or so).
There are many types of boats that you need to examine to see what suits your taste and wallet. Go online (www.yachtworld.com) to get an idea of what you could be into as well as cruising the local boat brokers.
