what is considered a “small boat”?
i have been reading regulations and warnings and it has small boat warnings but it does not say how small is small. is it small if your not comfortable going out or is it small under a certain length. or is it length combined with the design sailboat powerboat, day cruiser, coastal cruiser, cruiser? thanks for the help.
and also just a random question my marina does not have a gas station so i have no experience with this i bring my own gas. is gas at a marina way more expensive then at a gas station?
wow i was thinking small craft to be like under 30ft. hmm i was thinking 30 ft because there are 30ft that cross the oceans and handle anything that is thrown at them.
Well at 60′ LOA, I’m still considered a small craft! I’m cruising up in Alaska right now in my 60′ motor yacht, but there were some weather conditions that even tossed this near 50 ton (loaded) motor yacht like a small boat. Only 30′ boats that cross the oceans are sail boats, and it’s the experience of the Captain (helmsman) that keeps that vessel upright.
As far as fuel goes, the only real difference is the tint in the fuel. Gas at the dock or on land is the same. If the state mandates Ethanol, then all gas has it up to the requirement. Marina’s have high insurance costs to cover fuel delivery on the water, so that’s the main difference in cost of fuel. Some people believe that the gas is different, it NOT! A colorant is added to the fuel to designate “Marine” fuel from “Automotive” fuel. The difference, the highway tax. If your marina allows you to fuel at your berth, then do so. It usually saves you about $1.00 per gallon and the gas is fresher since land gas stations run through the hold tanks every two weeks on average. Most marinas prohibit self fueling at the berth space. A marina may store gas for almost 120 days before replenishing.
