Dragon Boat Race- a ritualistic sport
When you find yourself in Singapore it’s not all that easy to pick and choose the places you want to visit simply because almost every tourist attraction in Singapore deserves a visit and is unique in its own way. Singaporean cuisine is no different as it is unlike any other in the world. The variety of dishes that you will be able to find at a regular food court for instance is truly remarkable and is not limited to a selection of food from one particular part of the world. What is called the cuisine of Singapore is a mixture of Malay (local), Indonesian, Indian and Chinese cooking styles. While in Singapore visitors should not forget to sample a serving of duck rice from a Chinese restaurant, a dish of soto ayam from an Indonesian restaurant and a helping of Murtabak from an Indian food outlet to get a taste of every dimension of Singaporean cuisine.
The Dragon Boat Festival in Singapore 2010 is set to get underway on the 10th of July and is to go on till the 11th of July. The events are scheduled to take place at the Marina Reservoir and Bedok Reservoir which are both equally scenic spots that can accommodate the needs of the festival with ease. Dragon boating is a popular sport in Singapore which originated in China. A dragon boat is a very narrow canoe like boat which is designed to be powered by humans.
The sport itself has a history which dates back more than 2000 years as an event which had great ritualistic importance to the people of China. In Singapore however the festival is held in remembrance of Qu Yuan who is a well known Chinese poet. During the Dragon Boat Festival which is held annually in Singapore many racing events are held which are fiercely contested. Each team has a total of 22 members of whom 20 are paddlers, a drummer who sets the pace and a steering captain who directs the boat on the correct path.
