A-Level Maths question ?!?
I need help on the following question because i was’nt in class when they covered it … The turning effect , T, of a power boat, is given by the formula T = 8CosXsin^2X, 0
Maximum turning effect will occur when the gradient function is zero.
T = 8cosX*(sinX)^2
dT/dX = 8cosX*2*sinX*cosX – 8sinX*(sinX)^2 = 16sinX(cosX)^2 – 8(sinX)^3
Therefore you need to solve the equation
16sinX(cosX)^2 – 8(sinX)^3 = 0
Change (cosX)^2 to 1 – (sinX)^2 and then factorise the equation to solve it.
You will need to use the second differential or the sign of the first differential each side of the turning points to decide which is the maximum.
