What kind of paints should i use to paint photograph-like pictures?

Well, i was drawing a picture of the titanic today. I did a colour wash with my watercoulor paints, and realised that it wasnt going to work. I wanted to paint the picture so it looks almost like a photograph, but water colours dont come smooth, it acts with alot of different shades of colours. Although this is good for some stuff like clouds, there where area’s that needed to be smooth and clear, like the plain open sky in one corner of the photo which was entirely blue, or the hull which is plain black. Obviously it needs shades, but i want to be able to put them in the specific locations myself.

Basically, i need more control over the colours so they do exactly what i want, and are rich. What sort of colours should i use?

I am an art student myself, specializing in realism.
If you wish to add colour, here are a couple of options:

1. If the surface area of your drawing is considerably big enough, like the size of a movie poster, than you will achieve the best realist effects with Oil Paints. Although this takes practice to master, Oil Paints have the best capacity to make art that is photographic

2. Acrylics are also an option. They dry veryyy quickly and can be easily applied with a small brush. The colours are water based, but very rich, and you will know exactly how the colours will turn out as you do it.

Acrylics might be for you, just because they dry quick (Oil Paints dry takes days) and they are very Hassle Free!
