Wooden Runabout Boat Plans – Things To Consider

Building a boat with a runabout boat plans entails a lot of things to consider. A runabout is a small motorboat used for faster navigation and moving about in the water.

It is mostly used for racing and sometimes for other pleasure activities like water skiing and fishing. So, if you can put in the time, effort and have the inclination, having a runabout boat plans would be the start.

Some of the things to consider that goes into the planning of a runabout boat are:

BUDGET

You have to start with a definite budget in mind. In looking around for a feasible runabout boat plans you can use, you have to make sure that the materials and the motor needed will fit with your predefined budget.

MATERIALS

You can use wood, specifically plywood. It is easier to work on wood and even most kit boats are mostly used of plywood. But the best material to use if you want to maximize speed is lightweight materials like fiberglass or fiber reinforced plastic materials. This will substantially reduce the weight and is best for racing runabout boats.

PROPULSION

The means of propulsion for a runabout can be an inboard outboard or jet drive engines. It may also have a diesel or gasoline system to fuel it.

An inboard engine is mounted within the hull, and a propepeller and drive shaft to drive the craft underneath the hull. It uses a separate rudder to steer the craft.

Outboard engines are mounted on the transom and uses either a tiller or a remote steering system for mechanical steering of the craft the left or right. This type of engine are are designed mostly to act as both propulsion and rudder.

Jet drives have a propeller inside a pump jet which draws water from underneath the hull and expelling it through a nozzle in the stern. This type would need more fuel than other but it is also more tolerant and easier to maneuver and navigate in shallow waters.

DESIGN

The design of the runabout should be fully compatible with the purpose you have in mind for the boat. All the consideration discussed above should also be kept in mind. This may seem like a daunting task at first but with a good runabout boat plans, this would a most rewarding project to embark on especially for a serial DIY person.
