Planes, trains, and boats are all considerably faster than they were fifty years ago. Why not cars?

Most methods of transportation have grown steadily faster in the past fifty years or so. Why then, has the automobile continued to top out at a little more than 100 MPH. I am obviously talking about the kind of car that the average person buys in a showroom, not a race-car or expensive sports-car.

Top speed is based primarily on aerodynamics on most cars. (There are those that are electronically limited for tire purposes, and those that top out the maximum rpm in the top gear before they hit an aerodynamic limit, but that’s rare.) So the common limiter is hp vs aero. And wind resistence increases by the square of the speed, (the formula is more complex than this, but the basic problem is there). Therefore the hp needed to go 150mph instead of 75mph, all other things being equal, isn’t 2X as much, it’s 4X as much (the square of the interval).

However, to a degree, I have to disagree with your premise. I remember when I was a kid in high school, a friend had a big block Roadrunner. It ran the quarter-mile in 15.0 at 92mph. It was, by all accounts, a pretty darned fast car back then. Recently, I was doing some testing for a manufacturer, and one of the competitor vehicles was a Honda Accord V6. Today, that’s just a generic, every day car. And guess what? It ran the quarter mile at about 14.9, 93mph, faster than the old heavy metal from 1970. It also gets massively better gas mileage, pollutes way less, is much more reliable, and, more to the point of your question, has a considerably higher top speed. We didn’t test that, but I would venture to guess the Accord tops out around 140mph, while the 1970 Roadrunner would be lucky to see 125. And remember, one is a family sedan that nobody would give a second look, vs a “supposed” muscle-car.
