I am buying my first rowing shell and I need some advice?

I have a friend who is sort of a trust fund baby. He is very knowledgeable, and is actually a coach. He has been giving me advice about what to buy and I am not sure he understands the concept of price range. His parents bought him a filippi a few years ago as his first boat. very nice boat new, and with new oars. he keeps trying to convince me to buy a slightly used filippi or empacher as well because they will be in better shape than some other boats. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like an empacher or filippi, but even slightly used they are kind of out of my price range. I mean I could stretch it and still get one, but this is my first boat. I am of the belief that it may not have to be the absolute nicest boat I ever own.

I am thinking slightly used hudson or sykes or something similar that may not be in pristine shape, but certainly race worthy for the small races i’m doing, and will also not break the bank.

Am I being cheap or is he being a little unrealistic?

uhhh no thats not cheap. filippis can be expensive…..try a used vespoli. those are great boats, obviously not as great as like hudson or even better resolutes. just go on vespoli.com and get a quote for a new one or look at the classifieds on their site.. my team has 5 vespoli and one res that we use for our varsity a boat.
