Festivities all year round

Nottingham offers entertainment by the quiver-ful, with something going on year-round. But coincide your visit with one of its many festivals and enjoy activities on tap.

The Spring Bank Holiday offers a pinch of international seasoning with One City, One World. Four days’ of dance and music celebrates Nottingham’s cultural diversity, with live entertainment from artists from countries as far-flung as Hungary, Japan, India and Ireland.

The same weekend plays host to City Pulse, a free music festival on Old Market Square paying tribute to genres including swing, ska, pop, soul, blues and rock and roll and bringing street music and live performances across the city. You’re planning to go clubbing anyway, so why not tie-in your late-May visit with the Dot To Dot Festival, which takes over various venues to introduce up-and-coming bands and international DJs?

For something a little higher-brow, the Nottingham Festival runs from late May to early June with a packed programme of opera, orchestral, chamber and jazz concerts, recitals, plays and film screenings at the Castle, Royal Concert Hall and Theatre Royal.

If summer’s a bit grey, liven up your July by coming to the two-day Caribbean Carnival, with its music tents, stalls and colourful parade of soca, reggae and steelpan sounds.

Steer your Nottingham adventure to the city’s famous waterways for the Riverside Festival in early August. This event is dripping with activities including Dragon Boat Racing along a one-mile stretch of the River Trent.

If you’re feeling energetic, coincide your visit with the Robin Hood Festival of Running; Nottingham’s biggest mass-participation sporting event at the start of September.

If you skip lunch you might be here in time for the Food and Drink Festival later that month. Taste-test regional and speciality fare on Old Market Square and at a sprinkling of participating establishments.

Unsurprisingly, Robin Hood is at the centre of the lion’s share of city events. The Robin Hood Beer Festival at the Castle in early October lays-on record numbers of real ales as you digest live entertainment from the Victorian bandstand. Two weeks later our famous outlaw returns to throw his Pageant. This two-day celebration recreates the medieval encampment where our hero crossed paths with the Sheriff of Nottingham. Make like a Merry Man surrounded by artisans, jesters, wandering minstrels, storytellers and live jousting tournaments.
If you’re a fan of the arts, NottDance festival in mid-October breathes life into the month with an international programme of artists and choreographers that will put the spring back into your step even after a heavy night!

The end of the month sees the arrival of GameCity Squared. This unique homage to videogames and interactive entertainment hacks into venues across Nottingham. Pick your guilty pleasure and let the games begin!

For something more light-hearted, the Nottingham Comedy Festival takes over nine venues at the end of October and start of November and showcases slapstick from dozens of talented comics.

You may arrive here as one of a small group, but join in with Nottingham’s packed festival programme and you’ll leave feeling part of something much bigger.
