Are there divers in the United States Coast Guard?

I just turned 18 and I’m considering on joining the Coast Guard, but I just want to know if there are any salvage divers or any other divers in the Coast Guard like there are in the Navy. If there are if anyone could give me information like; what they do? Where they are stationed? What part of the coast guard they are apart of? Training? Pay?Experience?

Yes, we do have divers. We don’t have a career field for them – it is a collateral duty – and they are stationed all over. We have them with our Deployable Operations Group units, one our Polar Class Cutters that go from the North Pole to Antarctica, and we have them with some of our larger Sector offices.

They do things like underwater surveys for IED’s, to check the serviceability of buoys, and for scientific support. As far as I know, they are all based out on the East, West and Gulf Coasts, with none in the inland river system or in the Great Lakes.

They go through the same dive schools the Navy does. We tend to be less experienced than the Navy divers, because they do it as a career, while we do it more as a part-time thing. There is no dive pay in the Coast Guard. While they are assigned to Cutters, they’d get sea pay.
