dive to the titanic

Is is true that if I get drunk, I can go swimming in the wintertime in freezing water and survive?
I read about this somewhere and was just curious if it was really true.
I live in Boston and was thinking about joining the L Street Brownies for their annual wintertime ‘dive’ into the waters of Boston Harbor.
They say that alcohol has an anti-freeze effect on the body, so your body can tolerate hypothermia if you have alcohol in your bloodstream (or so I read).
I’m not sure how true this is, or how it works.
Supposedly, some of the Titanic passengers survived this way. Upon realizing that all the lifeboats were gone, they binge-drank so they’d be able to survive swimming in the freezing water until help arrived. This was depicted in the movie. (remember that guy with the moustache who kept drinking while the ship was sinking?)
Note: this question is purely hypothetical. Let me make it clear that I don’t advocate anyone going out and getting drunk and swimming in cold waters.
Alcohol may have an anti-freeze effect on the body but your concern is not lowering the freezing temperature of your body, your concern is the onset of hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs as the body temperature lowers to a point where bodily functions slow down and ultimately cease. That temperature is about 94 degrees Fahrenheit which is far above freezing.
As one poster pointed out, alcohol is a vaso-dialator so it causes blood vessels, in particular in the skin, to open. With more blood in your skin you lose heat more quickly.
As your body cools, the enzymes that are required for life’s chemical reactions cease to work and all body functions follow in step with the enzymes. This is the result of massive loss of body heat or hypothermia. So, alcohol only speeds up the onset of hypothermia, it does not act as an anti-freeze.
