Does anyone have any tips on painting a straight line?

I don’t have a very steady hand and am wondering how to get around the problem of painting masts on boats. I have completed a picture except for the masts. I did them in my pencil sketch first but I used a ruler. I, obviously, cannot do that with paint as it will smudge as soon as I try to remove the ruler. The picture looks O.K. without the masts but I would be happier if I could put them in. Also I am going to come across this problem many times I am sure so does anyone have any suggestions or words of wisdom from your own experience of this? Short straight lines are not a problem using my rigger brush but anything longer than about 2 centimetres become very shaky.

Take a good look at a ruler and you’ll see one side is chamfered. Put it on your canvas chamfered side down and the straight edge is about 1mm off the surface. Now you can run your brush along the edge and paint a straight line without the paint creeping underneath. Now use the brush to smudge the line slightly or it will look like a piece of technical drawing.
