How do they determine the Handicap winner in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race?

Obvioulsy, not all the boats can go 20 knots etc etc. But to win the Handicap, would you have to win your division, or is each boat given a different/unique handicap?

Each design is assigned a handicap number. There are multiple handicap formluas. There is PHRF handicapping, IOR handicapping and lots of other rules. They start off with a basic formula, and then adjust that number based upon the average performance of that design. The number can also be adjusted by limiting the sail area and such that each boat can carry. Once the number is derived it is applied as a seconds per mile rating. In other words if a boat with a 135 handicap races a boat with a 150 handicap the 135 boat has to give the 150 boat a handicap of 15 seconds per mile.
