How do you row a fast boat without flipping?

A racing shell is inherently unstable. The center of gravity is well above the center of buoyancy making it easy for them to roll over.

This is true of many, if not most boats and even most large ships. (For example, aircraft carriers.)

Most ships either have a flat bottom, or their underside is broadly elliptical. If the ship heels to one side, enough volume is submerged on that side to move the C.o.B. in the direction of the heel, out from underneath the C.o.M. Under “normal” circumstances this is more than enough to counteract the heeling force. This is known as “initial stability.”

I’d say that a ship could still be considered inherently “statically stable” since the configuration of minimum potential energy is where the ship has “an even keel”

An experienced boatman, in a canoe for example, can also shift their weight to further dampen rolling motion.

Racing shells DO have less “initial stability” than most other boats, partly due to their large “length-to-beam-ratio”, partly due to how high up their center of gravity is relative to their beam(at least it is with the crew aboard). In other words, they have a small “metacentric height.” So, it’s easy to accidentally heel them past the point where there is no longer enough righting force, and they capsize……..

I imagine the rower(s) can also use the long oars in a similar way a tightrope walker uses a pole for balance.

EDIT: On the other hand, a modern surfboard has no initial stability at all. Rather, it is “dynamically stable’ in the same way a bicycle or a two legged human is. Stability depends on feedback from the rider. This is a matter of skill and practice, the particulars depend on the design of the vehicle or craft in question. Tilting a surfboard produces a reaction that steers it in that direction. Turning a bicycle’s steering wheel produces a net torque on the steering axle.
