I need help with an outboard motor!! AAArrrggh!!?

I have just bought an old 3.6 metre runabout with a (wait for it!!) 35hp Chrysler enine. Now I know they don’t make these anymore but they are a strong motor and go for years. it was owned by an old guy who was a mechanic so extremely well looked after but wasn’t used for the last 2 years. I took it out yesterday and it runs great but there is no power. It wan’t get up on plane and only seems to crawl along at about 4-5 knots. The motor doesn’t seem to be over-reving or straining, and the prop is old and nicked but doesn’t look to have any major structural damage on it. (nothing bent, etc) Now I know it is never going to be a racing boat but I would have expected to get about 18-20 knots out of it. Also the bow seems to sit very high. Is this because the motor needs to be trimmed or is it still just trying to get on plane? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this before I have to take it to a mechanic and fork over some hard-earned money.

Before you go and start changing props… that can lead to more problems than it will solve. I assume if the previous owner knew anything, the proper propeller would be on it. Obviously you are not planing out because you’re not getting up to speed. If the boat hasn’t been used for two years you could be looking at bad fuel or a gummed up fuel system. Fresh petrol and filters may help but you may also be in for a carb cleaning. Generally, if the engine runs smoothly but doesn’t have the power, it is usually a fuel problem.
