Boat problems help 1990 evinrude motor?
just got this boat and it is not getting up and going just stays at maybe 10 mph but when we go to turn the rpm race but it dont go does anyone have any ideas please help
ok so it will only go 10 mph with it full throttle but if you take sharp turn the rpm running and you don’t go any faster kind of like the prop is running freely
What horsepower?
Ok, I think I understand the question now.
You have what is called a “spun hub”. The propeller hub has a rubber insert, designed to protect the prop by absorbing the shock of impact. Yours has worn out and let go.
It can be “re-hubbed” at a reputable “prop shop”. It’s not really a do-it-yourself project as it requires specialized tools and skills. But it’s not all that expensive.
If you don’t know the age of the water pump impeller, or if it’s more than a couple years, replace it now – fairly simple operation, but the downside of water pump failure is catastrophic.
Never run the motor without supplying water to the lower unit – just 45 seconds of dry running can ruin the water pump impeller. Get a garden hose attachment (“muffs”) so you can work on the motor at home.
But don’t rev the engine over 1500 or so (except to warm up a cold engine) without the lower unit submerged in water – it needs backpressure on the exhaust.
