Has anyone from up North ever just decided to move to the Florida Keys?

I live in NJ, but have lived in FL and visited the Keys many times. I just wonder if it’s possible to live there and actually find a job. I’m interested in hearing from anyone (who’s not rich) who just decided the hell with the rat race and moved on their own. I’m single, no kids, got some money saved, and want to live on a boat eventually.

I chucked it all quite a LONG time ago, drove down here, and stuck with the big cities in South Florida where the jobs were at, like Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach area. Forget Miami unless you’re bilingual.

Live on a boat? I can’t think of a better place to do that than at some marina in South Florida. I would think 50,000 might get you a decent used tub. Marina rent is expensive.

The Keys. Hmm. You can find places to rent along the Keys, but you’ll probably need a roommate…or better, just look for somebody in the Keys who wants a roommate. It’s very pricey. Jobs are rather scarce everywhere in the Keys, but the best money is working tables in well-established restaurants/clubs that have endured the crappy economy, unless you have some kind of professional trade.
