“Code Blue” My husband is having a heart attack

My husband had a heart attack on August 3rd of this year, 2009. He is the Head Trainer at a large pet chain here in town, and he loves his job. He is off on Mondays and Fridays since Saturday and Sunday are both the days the store is the busiest and they sell the most classes, and he has classes on the weekends every hour but his lunch hour. He was a Professional Dog Handler for 21 years, but he’s lost his desire to go to dog shows since he has started training dogs, which, of course, is more about training people.

He does love to fish. He tries to go once a week, but sometimes it is two weeks in between his fishing days. If too much time has passed since he was able to go fishing, he will come in the house and tell me that “The boat misses me,” or “you know, boats really need to be in the water frequently.” I can just hear the boat whispering to him as he passes by on his way in from the kennel-”Miiiiiiike-have you deserted me???” This thought always tickles me and I make sure that on his next day off that neither I, nor anyone else, comes up with projects for him to do that will keep him at home.

We have fresh, brackish, and salt water, all close to us, so in most cases the fishing is also determined by the tides. Mike keeps track of the tides, the weather, and what other guys have been catching where, on internet fishing sites. On August third, which was a Monday, he was to get up at 5 AM to catch the tide right. He was going to a salt water dock, on the Ashley River, to scope out some areas that might be good for shrimp fishing-the season starts in September. So I woke up and he was already gone. This is one good husband-he will call and tell me what he is or isn’t catching, if he sees an alligator, he will take pictures of it with his cell phone and send the picture to me on my computer. We are very close.

It got to be around 10 AM and I thought it was about time for him to call. I miss a lot of calls if I am outside with the dogs, so I checked the caller ID to see if I had missed him, but I hadn’t. About 10:30 AM the phone rang, and his cell phone number came up. I answered the phone in a jolly fashion and heard-”Susie-listen.” And you bet I did.

He said “I am having a heart attack.” I knew he was right, we had almost been waiting on it. His mother was found by his stepfather, standing beside the bed, but her body folded over the bed, with her pajamas on her bottom and a party dress on her top. She had gone to him at 11 PM the night before and told him to get up, they should go dancing. Since it was probably at least 20 years since either had been dancing, we all assumed she had a heart attack.

And Mike’s father has heart problems. He is on a lot of medicine for his heart, and has been in the hospital with heart problems.

Mike himself has four heart defects. The foramen ovale, the opening from one side of the heart to the other, that closes right after birth, never closed in him. He had rheumatic heart fever as a child with some damage. He has a valve in his heart that instead of snapping shut as it should, whooshes past, never shutting completely, and it also gathers “algae” as the physicians call it, that can break loose and be thrown into his circulation. And fourth, he was racing motorcycles many years ago, before I met him, a guy had fallen ahead of him. Mike went over what he thought was a small drop to avoid hitting the fallen man, but it was thirty feet down, and he broke all the bones in his left lower leg, with them protruding out. There was a tiny creek, not even there if it hadn’t recently rained, that had some pretty bad bacteriae in it, that got into his system. He had endocarditis [infection in the heart,] pericarditis [infection around the heart,] and myocarditis [infection in the muscle of the heart,] with a fever of 105 degrees and was on intravenous antibiotics for weeks.

The place that Mike usually fishes is called Bushy Park. If I had to call an ambulance to get him from there, they easily might not have gotten to him in time. People fishing park on both sides of a road that is at least five miles long and has smaller roads branching off of that one. Luckily this time, not only did I know the name of the dock, I knew exactly where it was, I had been there many times as a child. Mike asked me to come get him, but I knew the situation was way too bad for me to handle, and I was at least thirty minutes away from him. I told the operators at 911 exactly what his truck looked like, down to the Storm Surge decal on the back window, in memory of our best dog ever, and what the boat looked like as well as what he looked like and what he had said, and which hospital to take him to. I know from a previous time that my mother fell, they take you to the nearest hospital, but the one we use is a major teaching hospital and where he was, I thought it was the closest one with a Coronary Care Unit that could handle his problem. You don’t need to be transferred at a time like this.

I am a retired RN myself, and I can snap-to and run a Code, but I had no idea what to do after I hung up from calling the ambulance. My kennel lady, all 90 pounds of her and she is 30 but looks 17, immediately started telling me what to get together, his pills, my toothbrush, toothpaste, my pills, I would have just wandered around the house if she had not taken me in hand.

I would guess it took me fifteen minutes to get myself together and get in the car, support hose on and all. The drive from our house to that hospital is about thirty five minutes, that is not a heavy traffic time of day. The whole way there, I had no idea if he was alive or dead; I knew if he had died, they would not call and tell me that while I was driving-they would tell me when I got to the hospital.
