Is Australia a nation of closet racists?
With an Australian election due soon both sides of politics are trying to take a tougher stand on asylum seekers arriving by boat.
Really if these boats were filled with white people and not Asian would Australians be more accepting?
If race or fear of Asians isn’t a major issue in the wider Australian community why are the politicians trying to win the votes of the minority racists in Australia?
People fear other people coming in illegally… or how they see it as being illegal….
I can remember the first boat loads of refugees that same in the late 1970′s… Asian refugees at that time… and yes many people were afraid of *the yellow peril* …..
Since that time… I’ve witnessed those refugees settle in this country.. becoming fine and upstanding citizens….I’ve seen their children and their grandchildren assimilating. They speak with as broad an australian accent as any white australian, the work and study hard. They have businesses and they employ other australians…
I have the same hopes for those who come here now IF given the chance…
I wouldn’t accept boat loads of white people any more or less than I accept boat loads of other skinned toned people…..
I wouldn’t allow anybody ( STRESS ON ANYBODY) in without screening… had we had screening more strongly applied after World War Two.. we mightn’t have had war criminals from white nations being able to hide out here and change their identities and escape for many years from the punishment of their war crimes…
I am happy to accept ANY refugee, from any country, from any race, from any religion… if they are wanting to come to this country and live in peace
yes you will find your hard core racists ( i despise them ) … and you will find your closet racists( who may NOT hate people, it’s just that they are ignorant) and then you will find your people that are too easily led by fear talk…
the third category .. are generally people who love the country and who don’t want things to change too much…… IF THEY COULD ONLY REMEMBER THE FIRST BOAT LOADS OF REFUGEES.. and then question if things REALLY changed that much… maybe they wouldn’t be too fearful.
I don’t think Aussies fear asians As much anymore… I think they might be concerned with the prospect of *sleepers* coming in in the refugee boats… I share those concerns SLIGHTLY .. but I tend to think the vast majority of people coming in JUST want to be safe..
If there was a system that could be created that didn’t make refugees feel bad… where people had to check in with counsellors or somebody/something … to try an eliminate the *sleeper* threat.. MAYBE that would help…
Politics is a dirty game… One side feeds the fear… the other side loses if they don’t ride the train.. and the effect snow-balls….
Personally the skin tone of a refugee doesn’t matter.. I just wish everybody could be safe and happy and peaceful
