Two boats start together and race across a 80 km wide lake and back. Boat A goes across at 80 km/h and returns at 80 km/h. Boat B goes across at 40 km/h, and its crew, realizing how far behind it is getting, returns at 120 km/h. Turnaround times are negligible, and the boat that completes the round-trip first wins.

b) What is the average velocity of the boat.

Time to go 80 km at a velocity of 80km/hr both ways 2 hours.

Time to go 80 km at a velocity of 40 km/hr = 2 hours.

By the time the second boat makes it across one the first one is done.

Time to go 80 km at 120 km/hr = 80/120 = 2/3 of an hour or 40 minutes.

Which boat are you talking about and when?

At the finish line, the first boat had a displacement of zero, so it’s velocity is 0. It is why we have speedometers in our cars, not velocometers.

When the first one finishes the average velocity of the second one is the same as speed would be 40 km/hr. Later on it would also be zero.
