Can you help me with this word problem?

For the annual Breakwater Sailboat Race, sailboats start singly at 1 minute intervals. Boat B is scheduled to start immediately following Boat A. The captain of boat B feels that no matter how fast Boat A travels his boat can sail 1 km/h faster. What is the average speed of each boat if Boat B overtakes Boat A at the 1st buoy, 4km from the start?
My curriculum has nothing to teach me about how to solve this. I am stumped! Thanks for your help!

You know that distance = speed * time.
The problem seems confusing because the speeds are quoted in km per hour, the time in minutes.
Need to get everything in terms of minutes. Instead of thinking of boatA going A kph, think A/60 kpm. Time t is in minutes.

4 km = ( A/60 ) * t = ( ( A+1 ) / 60 ) * ( t -1)
after some manipulation, you get to
A^2 +A -240 = 0, where the only positive solution is A = 15

So A goes 15 kph for 16 minutes and B goes 16 kph for 15 minutes.
